Jamia

Wednesday 9th December 2009
Dean's Park, York Minster

Over 400 people joined us for Jamia - making our festival-style  celebration of 20 years of children's rights a day to remember.

Our giant PapaKata teepees looked stunning next to York Minster, and our programme of global arts and performances kept audiences entertained, clapping, singing and dancing all day long.

The Very Reverend Keith Jones, Dean of York, said:

"We at the Minster are delighted to welcome and celebrate the     children of the world by giving a setting for Jamia.  Real progress     in this dangerous world is partly measured by our care of children,     who too often suffer unseen."

This unique event was a first for York, and you can see photos
here on our online Flickr gallery.

The day featured performances from: Rainmaker - Djembé drumming group; Seikou Susso - African musician and story teller; Brazilian Capoeira dance; Iranian musicians Fariborz Kiannejad and Arash Morady; poetry from Siobhan McMahon, Khadijah Ibrahiim and Azalia Anisko; Annapurna Indian Dance; 7-piece funk band Digital Earth; and the Henshaw's Hotspots music ensemble.

We hope to make Jamia an annual celebration of human rights in the heart of York, and already have a few ideas up our sleeve...
