Placements in Mali

These are our local partners involved in ICS placements from 2012-15.

École Enfants Deficients Auditifs Bamako (EDA Bamako)

EDA – the School for Deaf Children – recognises education is crucial for children with disabilities and hearing impairments because they cannot communicate with their family or members of their community.

Their activities include: counselling for deaf children, speech therapy, academic and vocational schooling, education in sports and theatre, providing education and research trips, sign language training for parents of deaf children.

Volunteers will support EDA in promoting the social integration of deaf children, delivering speech therapy and hearing rehabilitation, and developing education for deaf and disabled children.

Their approach and educational strategy demonstrates that someone with learning disabilities is capable of learning and developing, whatever the nature of their disability.

AMALDEME’s activities include providing specialist therapy and healthcare, education, providing cultural activities, and advocating for the rights of disabled people.  Volunteers will support them with developing strategies and activities for these areas of work.

  • lobbying to influence government policies
  • providing education in eye health and preventing blindness

  • providing training on income-generation for blind and partially-sighted adults
Volunteers will support UMAV in developing their financial administration, and advocacy plans. UMAV are also keen to facilitate exchange between UK volunteers with disabilities and young Malians with disabilities.

Association Jeunesse Action (AJA)

The Association for Youth Action is a national organisation that addresses youth unemployment across Mali. In the more vulnerable areas, it also promotes the right of women and young people to be involved in the social and economic lives of their communities.

In urban areas, AJA strengthens opportunities for young people in the craft and artisan sector. In rural areas, they focus on agriculture and fishing.
Volunteers will help develop the skills of both young Malians and AJA's training staff, particularly in the areas of marketing, small businesses management, and vocational skills relating to crafts and agriculture.
