What's involved?
How long do placements last?
Team member placements are open to young people aged 18-25
at the time of departure. These placements last for 12 weeks.
Team leader placements last up to 12 months.
They are open to experienced people aged 23 and above.
How do you help me prepare for my placement?
There are some practical things you need to do, such as arranging vaccinations. We will give you guidance on what to do and when.
All volunteers must attend a pre-departure training weekend in York. This helps you understand more about development issues, and prepare for living and working in a different culture.
Once you arrive in-country, the first few days of your placement are dedicated to learning more about the country and culture.
All our volunteers are eligible to join our
online network, which is a great place to meet other volunteers and talk to those who've already been out on placement.
Where could I be going?
We have ICS placements in Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Mali and
the occupied Palestinian territory. Find out more about these countries in
Where we workDo I need to speak the language?
Team members don't need language skills. You'll get some training in-country, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you pick things up.
Of course, if you do have language skills that's a bonus!
Language skills are essential for
team leaders: Spanish for Bolivia, French for Burkina Faso and Mali, and English/Arabic for Palestine.
What happens when I return home to the UK?
You will share your experience and what you've learned with your community in the UK. A final training session with us in York will help you do that.
How do I know if it's for me?
- You don’t need any specific qualifications.
- Personal qualities are
important, like being motivated, willing to learn, and committed to
helping others.
- You must be living in the UK. If you don't have a British passport, you must have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, or be an EU/EEA citizen living in the UK.
- There are some practical things you need to do to get ready for your placement, but we’ll give you guidance and support.
- The scheme is open to everyone regardless of their financial background.
